Where our future used to be, we now face a massive debt.
The debt is national and measurable. We in America spent two decades buying on credit. We made promises we couldn’t keep to buy cars, houses, vacations, and plasma screens we couldn’t afford. When we defaulted, the debt shifted upward to a government that had already been putting its wars and occupations on the global equivalent of plastic.
The debt is also environmental and abstract. All this crap we bought on credit had to come out of the earth. We’ve razed forests and eroded soil, over-fished the oceans and depleted fresh water, and turned our bodies and environment into toxic waste dumps. We took oil and coal out of the ground and turned it into smoke that has been trapping heat in the atmosphere.
In short, we consumed like there was no tomorrow. And as a result of the economic and environmental crises triggered by our multi-decade spending spree, tomorrow now seems to be shrinking to a little black dot.
To state the problem in the starkest, most personal terms: I look at my son and I try to imagine the future in which he will live, and I can’t do it. I don’t dare. I don’t believe that I am unique in feeling this way. Too often, when we now look to the future, we face a “Keep Out!” sign propped up by a combination of our own fear and anxiety.
This is another crisis, one that is unfolding on the most intimate and the most public levels. It’s a crisis because we need futurity in the same way that we need air, food, and water—other resources threatened by the forces of enclosure. Not just any futurity, but concepts of the future in which tomorrow is in some way better than today.
To put it another way: We need to know that our actions in the present will count toward something, will be meaningful. Not just a future for our own damn selves, but for the whole of the planet and humanity. The future belongs to everyone, or it should—and, indeed, the future is much more difficult to enclose than other commons. Anyone can access or use the future, through the power of our imaginations.
That’s one way of defining “the commons”: anything that no one owns but everyone can access and use. The Internet is a commons. So are the oceans and our atmosphere. The radio spectrum is a commons. So are our streets and water delivery systems.
All of these things require intention and cooperation to maintain, lest we use them up. In other words, all the commons need people to care about them. They need cultivation.
So does the commons we call the future. We don’t cultivate the future with shovels or software, the way we might tend other commons. Instead, we cultivate the commons of the future through stories. The future is, in fact, just a collection of stories that we tell each other. The more and the better stories we tell—and the more people we tell them to—the more we strengthen the commons of the future.
That’s why the site I edit, Shareable.net, is launching the Shareable Futures series. (It’s also why On The Commons has launched its exciting “WePower” project, which invites people to tell stories of commoning.) As the Shareable series rolls on from now through July, you’ll discover some of today’s most visionary and accomplished literary futurists—including Cory Doctorow, Bruce Sterling, Mary Robinnette Kowal, Paolo Bacigalupi, and others—imagining futures where technology has changed the rules of ownership and access, and people are able to share transportation, living spaces, lives, dreams, everything and anything. These are futures in which we are surviving and even thriving, largely by learning to share our stuff.
The short stories and speculative essays of the Shareable Futures series are ultimately hopeful, but they are not utopian propaganda; our writers come from the perspective that the laws of social thermodynamics are impossible to escape. Instead of utopia, these stories give readers troubles and ambiguities, vividly conceived characters and places, compelling narratives and intelligent speculation. We hope you’ll enjoy them, and enjoy them in the context of the other, real-life, here-and-now stories we tell on Shareable.net (as well as on our content partner site, On The Commons).
But more than that, we hope you’ll join us in shaping these Shareable Futures. We invite you to debate the ideas and merits of each story by leaving a comment, of course, but we also invite you to submit your own stories (written, filmed, whatever) to me at jeremy(at)shareable.net. These are small, fun steps; helping to shape the Shareable Futures series won’t erase the national debt or stop global warming. But we might help give each other courage to face the future and collaboratively build a story that just might—who knows?—change the world.

Be balanced about the future...and real science based
I too am worried about the future.
If we have anything to do with global climate cycle warming it is 10 percent or less. There were two polar icemelts be for mankind existed on earth. This year all the volcanic activity emitted more CO2 that we have in the last 300 years. So, wrecking the economy and disrupting free markets is just stupid. When countries develop economically, populations decrease, and they take care of the environment because they can afford too.
This is what will happen in China and then India. If you want to make a dent on CO2, invent a solar ccok stove for the billions that still live a very basic lifestyle in the developing world.
I was in junior high and high school in the late 60’s and mid 70’s during the first environmental movements and Earth days…the world was ending then. It did yield much better water quality, ended leaded gas, and started emission standards. I am true conservationist and believe in environmental continuous improvement. I will never support carbon taxes based on junk science and people who have very mixed motitves (among the sincere environmentalists are people with very different motives)
Why are there any grandfathered powerplants? Why is China opening so many coal fired powerplants with no emissions controls? Why don’t we go natural and just mow what ever grows? Who decided what was a weed and not? Why are we laying off all those NASA scientists and engineers instead of them being devoted to true energy independence and clean technologies? NASA started the info age and revolution in materials.
Finally, I think there are many reasons to be optomistic. Free trade is breaking out every where. From nearly every branch of science/ technology there are significant break throughs with commercialization just around the corner.
Markets will correct the excesses and abuses. We should not dismantle trading markets that play a vital role in the world economy. We should put in jail the crooks and set up safeguards to assure markets due what they were intended to do, but not cripple our economy.
You are right, individuals must learn and choose to live within their means and borrow only for things that appreicate in value.
Finally, I an America living in China. While not perfect, China is doing an amazing job creating better lives for their citizens. I am proud to be a part of this effort, yet remain fiercely proud of my country. The US is the richest country in the world and the land of opportunitiy, lest we regulate and strangle ourselves while the rest of the world laughs.
I found your post way to pessimistic or at least I see as may reasons to be optimistic as long as we as a country and as individuals embrace the future and its opportunities. It will requre change.
